Solutions

Locum tenens gives healthcare organizations a flexible way to maintain patient care when permanent staffing falls short. These are the most common ways facilities put it to work.

01

Vacancy Coverage

Keep services running while you recruit. Locum physicians and advanced practice providers fill open positions so patient access, revenue, and quality metrics hold steady during a permanent search.

02

Leave & Absence Coverage

Planned or unexpected time away — parental leave, medical leave, sabbaticals, vacation, or CME — covered by credentialed providers who step in without disrupting schedules.

03

Seasonal & Surge Staffing

Flex capacity for respiratory season, seasonal population shifts, and census spikes, so you can staff to demand instead of carrying permanent overhead year-round.

04

Call & Shift Coverage

Night, weekend, and holiday call relief that protects your permanent team from burnout and keeps coverage gaps from closing service lines.

05

New Service Line Launch

Open a new clinic, program, or specialty service on schedule. Locum providers staff the launch while you build demand and hire permanently.

06

Rural & Underserved Markets

Reliable coverage for critical access hospitals and hard-to-fill markets, where permanent recruitment can take a year or more.

07

Credentialing & Licensure Support

Coordination of hospital credentialing, privileging, payer enrollment, and state licensure — including the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact — to shorten time to start.

08

Locum-to-Permanent

Work with a provider on assignment before making a permanent offer, giving both sides a real-world look at clinical and cultural fit.

Resources

Practical guidance for physicians and advanced practice providers working locum tenens — from your first license application to your first day on site.

Getting Started

What locum tenens is

Locum tenens — Latin for “to hold the place of” — means practicing on temporary assignments that cover a facility’s staffing needs. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and CRNAs use it to earn supplemental income, test a new market, transition between roles, or design a career around flexibility. Assignments range from a single weekend of call to several months of continuous coverage.

Licensing

Practicing across state lines

You need an active license in each state where you practice. Eligible physicians can use the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact to obtain licenses in participating states through an expedited pathway, and registered nurses may qualify for a multistate license under the Nurse Licensure Compact. Start license applications early — timelines vary widely by state board.

Credentialing

Getting privileged at a new facility

Every facility verifies your education, training, licensure, board status, work history, and references before granting privileges. A current CV with month-and-year dates and no unexplained gaps, plus quick responses to verification requests, is the single biggest factor in how fast you can start.

Malpractice Coverage

Understanding your protection

Before accepting an assignment, confirm who provides malpractice coverage, the policy limits, and whether the policy is occurrence-based or claims-made. If it is claims-made, confirm that tail coverage is included so you remain protected for care delivered during the assignment after it ends.

Taxes & Finances

Planning as an independent contractor

Locum providers are commonly paid as independent contractors on a 1099 basis. That typically means making estimated quarterly tax payments and tracking deductible business expenses. Work with a tax professional familiar with locum tenens income to plan for your situation.

Travel & Logistics

Arriving ready to practice

Confirm travel, lodging, and ground transportation details, your first-day reporting time and contact, parking and badge instructions, and EHR training or system access before you leave home. Keep receipts as instructed for any approved expenses.

Checklist

Documents to have ready

Keeping these current and in one place can cut weeks off credentialing for every new assignment.

  • Medical school diploma and residency / fellowship certificates
  • Board certification(s)
